Holistic medicine looks at the whole patient, including his diet, home, heredity, and any other factors that influence his health. Most holistic medicines use natural approaches to healing.

Our clients request holistic modalities for many reasons. Some just prefer a natural approach to their pets' health. Others are concerned about the side effects of drugs or surgery on their pets. And still others are told that there is nothing more that modern medicine can do for their pets.

We offer the following holistic treatments at Wilmington Animal Hospital:

Homeopathy: Using minute doses of substances found in nature, this approach can gently alleviate numerous chronic and acute conditions, including behavioral problems, medical conditions like Cushings Disease, gastrointestinal problems, liver disease, skin conditions, and heart and lung diseases.

Acupuncture:This ancient Chinese medicine uses fine needles to stimulate the body to alleviate conditions from chronic pain, skin, musculoskeletal and nervous disorders. Pets can get relief from such conditions as hip and elbow arthritis, chronic pain from disc disease, seizure disorders, lick granulomas, nerve injuries and dry eye.

Chiropractic: Subtle misalignments of the spine can have a major impact on a patient's health. By gently realigning the spine, patients can experience great relief with problems such as back pain, sciatica, urinary incontinence, gastrointestinal problems, neck pain, otitis, etc. Chiropractic adjustments also enhance the mobility in patients of all ages and enhance performance in dogs doing agility, coursing, and other sports.

Nutrition: Most pets suffer from subtle nutritional imbalances, generally related to eating processed diets. Many animals with diseases such as allergies, pancreatitis, hip dysplasia, and heart failure can improve with diet modification. We can help you design simple, individualized nutritional plans that suit your busy lifestyle and your pet's nutritional needs.

Nutritional therapies: Supplementation with appropriate nutrients can assist your pet in disease prevention and healing. We carry a wide range of supplements to benefit your pet with conditions ranging from arthritis to cancer and heart disease.

Herbs: We offer herbal therapies to support your pet with cancer, liver disease, heart disease, constipation, and other medical conditions. Since September 2006, we have been working with the proprietary herb Neoplasene, whose principle component is bloodroot. Used by native Americans for centuries to remove external tumors and warts, this herb has been shown in vitro to selectively kill cancer cells while ignoring healthy cells. We are currently treating dogs and cats with localized malignant tumors such as oral cancers (melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, etc.), certain skin tumors, and bladder tumors. This treatment is considered experimental.

Medical ozone therapy: Using small concentrations of medical ozone, patients can experience palliation from such conditions as cancer, liver problems, pancreatitis, and gastroenteritis.
